Los Aguachiles is one of the few Mexican restaurants in Madrid that focuses on seafood, drawing inspiration from the cuisine of Sinaloa. The restaurant has quietly built one of the most credible Mexican addresses in the city, expanding from its original Salamanca locations to a newer outpost right in the middle of Chueca.

I visited the Chueca location with a friend for a weekday dinner.

Location / Environment

The Chueca branch sits at Calle de San Bartolomé, 7, a few minutes’ walk from Chueca metro station. The decoration of the restaurant left me confused, as there was no clear style, like the restaurant couldn’t decide if it wanted to come off as traditional, modern or just comfortable.

The service was average; although the waiter was helpful with our order, the staff didn’t look very motivated to work that day. A bit slow in pace with everything, not particularly friendly in terms of interaction. Moreover, the leftovers from the table next to us were left around way too long, considering that it was not a busy night for the restaurant at all…

Los Aguachiles – Menu

The menu at Los Aguachiles Chueca is built around the dish the name promises: aguachile — prawns cured in lime acid and dressed with chillies, a preparation with roots deep in the Pacific coast of Sinaloa. The restaurant offers different preparations of this dish.

Beyond the signature, the menu spreads across entradas, sharing plates, oysters, and mains (fuertes), with a notable emphasis on fresh seafood throughout. Desserts, I would say are brief without anything in particular standing out.

Los Aguachiles – Food

We started with the guacamole, which was fresh and well-balanced in terms of texture and acidity. One of the better versions I have found outside (even inside) Mexico.

The tuna ceviche with mango was similarly fresh, although maybe a little bit too sweet for my taste.

From the tacos, we actually tried several options. The ones I liked the most were the arrachera, which were rich with their cheese and beef combination and the crispy fried shrimp ones.

Finally, from the mains, we also tried the spicy tuna with guacamole, which I particularly enjoyed. If you like spicy food, this has some proper kick to it!

Conclusion

Although the first impression of the space itself and the staff might not be ideal, Los Aguachiles, makes up for it through its dishes. Bold flavours combining heat and acidity, fresh ingredients and generally strong execution. While I can’t say that all the dishes will blow your mind, this is a solid option, especially considering its niche, focusing on Sinaloan influences. I would visit again, also to try their chilaquiles, which is one of my favorite Mexican dishes, and part of the menu at Los Aguachiles.
