Thunder is a vegan fast-food restaurant. I am usually very skeptical about vegan places that try to imitate meat dishes. Those are usually extremely unsuccessful and their dishes do not come close to the equivalent meat versions of the same dish.
Thunder’s options have been a positive surprise for me.
Location/Environment
Thunder has 2 locations, one in Malasaña that is only for take away and one in La Latina that also has a seating space.
I visited the Malasaña location for takeaway.
Thunder Vegan – Menu
The menu includes burger options with either vegan fried chicken (which tastes too much like actual fried chicken) or vegan beef.
There are also fries, tater tots, and desserts.
Thunder Vegan – Food
Opted for the Nashville “chicken” wings as the appetizer. If you exclude the fact that they had no bone, I could easily think that these were actual chicken wings if I was a little distracted. Very nice spicy seasoning as well.
The Iconic beef burger had vegan beef, cheddar cheese, pickles, lettuce, and Iconic sauce. Here you could tell that you were not eating beef, mostly due to the texture. Nevertheless, for vegans, I would say that this would be a good beef substitute.
The Nashville fried chicken burger with vegan fried chicken, guacamole, coleslaw, and pickles was my favorite. Nice texture and taste from the vegan chicken and once again you couldn’t immediately tell that this was not actually chicken. The only minus was that the bread was a bit stale.
The tater tots were super crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. If you like tater tots probably Thunder will become your favorite place to get them in Madrid.
For dessert, we got a salty brownie cookie. It was tasty and the salt cut down the chocolate’s richness.
Conclusion
Thunder Vegan is really on a mission to create sustainable, eco-friendly fast food and is currently succeeding. Even if you are a meat-eater, you will still be pleasantly surprised by some of the options here. Opt to order in or visit their La Latina location if you want to have a sit-down meal.
