PerretxiCo is a restaurant chain with tapas (pinxtos) inspired from the Basque country cuisine. Apart from several locations in Madrid, there are also restaurants in other cities such as Santander and Logroño.
We visited the Chueca location for a midweek lunch.
Location/Environment
PerretxiCo Chueca is located in Augusto Figueroa street which is quite a central street in the neighbourhood. The restaurant has both regular tables and stands and has overall a casual vibe.
PerretxiCo – Menu
The menu includes several pintxos, some of them served with a twist compared to the classics. There are also a few main dishes both with meat and fish.
Apart from the à la carte menu, there is also a set menu for 2 people minimum. The set menu includes some of the most famous dishes of PerretxiCo.
You can see here the different menus.
Service
The staff was pleasant and gave us some instructions on how to best enjoy certain dishes.
However, although the place was not particularly busy there was a noticeable delay between some of the dishes during our meal.
PerretxiCo – Food
First, we got the famous “Vaccine”. A beef croqueta with cream cheese and tobiko. It is served with a syringe with meat juice that you inject in the croqueta before you bite into it. This particular dish has won an award in a tapas competition. The dough of the croqueta was sweet and the filling rich. Additional points for presentation too.
The ensaladilla rusa was balanced both in flavours and textures. A very decent execution of a classic dish.
The artichokes were served with small bacon pieces and a rich truffle mayo sauce. Potentially the dish would benefit from some acidity, but this was also solid.
We also got the patatas bravas. Those were served with a spicy tomato-paprika sauce that was more “runny” than what you typically get in other restaurants. On the side there was also their version of aioli which was made by mayo with a strong dose of garlic. I personally enjoy garlic but I can see how some people might think that it is too strong for their taste.
The donut is another famous dish at PerretxiCo. A sweet donut filled with Basque stew and served with a small cup of consomme for dipping. Very flavorful and moist with the help of the consomme.
Finally the pil pil codfish with vegetable pisto. This was very bland and neither the fish or the pisto had any particular seasoning or strong flavour.
Conclusion
PerretxiCo is a modern pintxo bar with some interesting options both in terms of presentation and flavour. I was not overly impressed with all the dishes and some were actually disappointing. If you stick to the recommendations, it is an ok option for a more modern take on the classics.
