Nunuka is steadily becoming one of the most famous Georgian restaurants in Madrid. Operating for less than 2 years, it has still managed to attract the attention of the foodie scene in Madrid. It is currently featured as a recommendation in the Michelin guide.
Location/Environment
Located in Chueca, Nunuka gives a welcoming bistro vibe. The restaurant is small and apart from the tables, there is also a barra where you can sit and enjoy your meal.
It has a very relaxing atmosphere even though it’s almost always full of customers.
Nunuka – Menu
The menu is relatively short but includes several interesting options. There are 3 different variations of Khinkali, the traditional Georgian dumplings, as well as 2 variations of the famous Khachapuri cheese boats.
Service
The staff was pleasant and monitored the progress of the meal. I would say that there was a slight delay in between some dishes, although nothing excessive.
Of note that when the staff took our order, they came back to confirm what we wanted to get, but they still forgot one of the main dishes. Since we were already at the end of the meal we told them that there was no need to add it to the order at that time.
Nunuka – Food
As an appetizer, we got the dip variety with the cornbread. Ricotta and mint, beetroot, pumpkin, and spinach dips were accompanied by crispy pieces of cornbread. The dips were tasty and had a refreshing taste.
The leek balls were really interesting, with a very flavorful sauce made with walnuts. There was also kefir and citrus in the marinade. A tasty and visually impressive dish.
Next, we had the excellent khachapuri with cheese and egg yolk. There was a variety of cheeses, including feta in the filling which gave a nice texture and saltiness.
The Georgian dumplings with meat and broth were tasty, but in my view, they would benefit from some additional broth in the filling.
From the main courses, we had the beef qababi with adjika, a red spicy Georgian sauce that I particularly liked. The mini qababi were served on lettuce leaves, which allowed you to eat them like mini wraps.
Next, we had a rabbit stew in a garlicky sauce. I am a garlic fan so for me this was delicious. It was served with a warm mushroom salad with pickled onions, pomegranate, and cilantro. This salad had both an interesting taste and texture.
For dessert, we got a honey cake with walnuts and dulce de leche. Flavorful and great texture from the walnuts on top.
Finally a Napoleon with a light cream and berries inside. The pastry was flaky and the cream was fluffy so it was not overwhelming.
Conclusion
I enjoy Georgian cuisine and in my opinion, Nunuka has one of the best versions in Madrid. Similar to Kinza, you can find some Georgian classic dishes. Nunuka also has various elevated versions with interesting combinations of flavors and textures. I would gladly visit again to try the rest of its dishes.
