Mami Tacos is a famous Mexican restaurant and one of the few with Birria tacos in Madrid. A mother and her daughter came from Mexico and opened this restaurant that serves beef birria, a traditional stew that is cooked for several hours resulting in juicy and tender meat. Birria tacos are typically dipped in the stew and are served with the broth so you can dip the taco in.
We visited with a friend for lunch on a weekday.
Location/ Environment
The restaurant has two floors with tables and on the ground floor a small bar where drinks are prepared and you can place your order.
The place is quite lively as there is always loud music and you will find that it is busy both on weekdays and weekends.
Mami Tacos Birreria – Menu
The menu includes the classic Birria tacos as well as a couple of different tacos options. There is a quesadilla, nachos, and some other tortilla dishes, including one in which the tortilla gets fully covered with grilled cheese.
You can also find margaritas, Mexican beers, and beverages on the drinks menu.
Service
The restaurant is for the most part self-service. You go up to the bar/counter to order and you get a receipt with your order number. Once your order is ready your number will appear on the small screen and you will go pick up your tray from the order window.
Mami Tacos Birria – Food
We kicked things off with a mango margarita. It was frozen and the staff told us that is among the most popular options. Refreshing without being too “boozy”.
We had to try the birria taco. The meat was melting in your mouth and dipping the taco in the consomé added a lot of flavor and moisture. I opted for two extra salsas (a red chili one and one with green tomatillo), particularly the red one packed a lot of heat. A great taco and I highly recommend the extra salsas.
The Papi taco had chorizo and chicharron in a blue corn tortilla. Also good, but couldn’t match the birria beef flavor.
We also got a quesadilla (La Gringa) with beef birria and a “blanket” of grilled cheese inside. It was also served with consomé which fit very well. I also recommend the extra salsas for this one.
Conclusion
Mami Tacos Birreria is a great place to try the amazing Mexican birria tacos. While its tacos might be more expensive than for example Takos Al Pastor which is in a similar category, they are delicious and worth a try.
