Since I am Greek, I am always searching for good Greek restaurants. Egeo Suvlakeria is one of the most famous in Madrid.
It mostly serves typical street food options, so it has a more casual environment.
I have both visited for lunch at their Malasaña location and have ordered delivery at home so I could try several options.
Location/Environment
Egeo has 2 restaurants in Madrid, one in Malasaña and one in Lavapies. The one in Malasaña is relatively small with around 10 tables.
The design has mostly white and blue colors on the walls and the floor, which is typical for Greek restaurants abroad.
Menu
The menu includes different meat dishes, such as the famous Greek souvlaki (skewers with pork or chicken), sausage, beef patties and a type of falafel (revithokeftedes).
Apart from the portion option, you can choose to eat these in pita bread, which is the most typical street food in Greece.
There are also salads, traditional dips and appetizers.
Egeo also has a small collection of Greek wines, beers and spirits like tsipouro.
Service
The dishes were served fast, but there was a slight delay in getting our order. Also, the dishes did not arrive at the expected order. We got our mains before the salad and we got the beers but not the water which we had to ask for again.
While the waiter was polite and cheerful, it felt like he was not paying attention to what was happening and the needs of the customers. At the time we arrived the restaurant was not busy.
We had to get up and go to the counter to pay our bill which is not a big deal, but still, some more oversight on the service side would have been welcome.
Egeo – Food
We started with a Dakos salad which is a staple in Cretan cuisine. Tomato, feta cheese and smashed mini rusks topped with olive oil and occasionally onion and capers such as in this case.
The flavor was good but it needed more olive oil which is served in abundance on a Dakos salad in any restaurant in Greece to soften the rusks and add flavor.
We had pita bread with pork skewer (pita souvlaki) which comes with tomato, onion and sauce (go for the yogurt and cucumber base tzatziki). These topics are the most common ones, although they vary depending on the region. You can add french fries which is also a typical ingredient in Greece.
Good flavor and the size allows you to eat more than one.
Also, I tried one with sausage which is served with the typical toppings, plus a sunny-side-up egg, which I have never seen in Greece before. Although I was skeptical in the beginning, I liked the combination.
Another pita bread with sausage that is flavored with leeks. This type of sausage is also traditional in some Greek regions. I enjoyed that one too.
Finally, we got the mousaka, which is one of the most famous Greek dishes. Oven-baked, it includes layers of potatoes, eggplant, minced meat and bechamel sauce.
The ratio of the ingredients was not in the right proportions. The bechamel sauce (without gluten) was a very thin layer and the potato was thick compared to the rest of the layers. However, my main issue was with the bechamel ratio, which could have completely changed the dish. This appeared to be premade and frozen.
Conclusion
Egeo is a good place to eat the “souvlaki”/meat as a portion or as a pita wrap. Accompany it with a cold Greek beer and a side of tzatziki. When I visit again, I will stick to these basics that the restaurant seems to be executing well.
For someone that hasn’t been exposed to Greek cuisine a lot, some of the other dishes can appear as very well prepared, but people that are familiar with Greek cuisine will be able to point out several flaws.
