Casa Reveuelta first opened its doors in 1966. It operates as a tapas bar with high tables where people stand to drink a beer and try the famous fried cod. Apart from the original tapas bar, in 2021, they opened another location a few meters away, with a more extensive menu. As I mentioned, the most famous dish is the fried cod and that’s something you can get in both locations.

I visited on a Sunday before noon for a quick aperitivo and some tapas.

Location/Environment

Casa Revuelta is very close to Plaza Mayor at the centre of Madrid. This is an area with a lot of tourists, so you can expect to find a mixed crowd including locals and visitors.

Casa Revuelta

This is an old-school place,  with people standing at the high tables outside or inside. Customers usually stay for a quick bite and do not linger for long, which helps manage the large crowds.

The staff is fast and efficient since there are usually lines of people trying to get a table. Avoid peak hours and try to get there early, preferably on a weekday, to ensure you get a table without having to wait.

Casa Revuelta – Menu

The menu at the original location is quite succinct; you can find the famous fried cod, croquetas with jamon and a few other classics. Depending on the time of your visit (it opens at 10:30 am), some dishes like the callos, might not be available during the whole day.

Casa Labra – Food

The batter-fried cod slice had just been fried, so it was hot and fresh. You could tell that the fish was of good quality, but the batter was overall oily.

The croquetas with jamon were very creamy and with good-sized chunks of jamon. I usually don’t like larger pieces of jamon in croquetas, but this time I found the balance quite good.

I also tried the empanada, which was fried and had chicken filling. The dough was ok, but the filling was not anything special in terms of flavour.

Conclusion

While Casa Revuelta is a nice place to have a quick drink accompanied by a few tapas, the food is not particularly exciting. The prices are very reasonable, but if you want great cod at a similar price point, you should opt for Casa Labra instead.
