Ultramarines del Coso is part of the Lamucca Group and because of that, I was already skeptical before my visit. I have been to Lamucca Group restaurants before and honestly, I was always underwhelmed by the food and the experience. However, Ultramarines del Coso has two locations, but we opted for the one in Trafalgar (more menu options).

I visited with some guests on a Friday for dinner.

Location / Environment

The atmosphere at Ultramarines del Coso Trafalgar feels casual and unfussy, consistent with the nature of the restaurant. It aims for an approachable experience and the space is aligned to one of a modern restaurant in a lively neighbourhood. Stepping in, you can smell the grill and the garlic aroma through the open kitchen.

The service was casual but attentive.

Ultramarines del Coso – Menu

The menu at Ultramarines del Coso is built on Mediterranean-style dishes and tapas, with a mix of meat and seafood options. The menu is different between locations, although the philosophy around the dishes remains the same. Modern Mediterranean cuisine is at the forefront.

Ultramarines del Coso – Food

We started with some gildas, anchovies on brioche and artichokes with jamon. The gildas and the artichoke were ok but nothing memorable, while the buttery brioche with the anchovies was delicious.

Next up, the oysters with Nam Jim salsa, a Thai slightly spicy sauce. Those were fresh and the sauce was giving the oysters a nice spicy and acidic kick.

The torrenzos were thick and juicy, not so crunchy though. Most of the crunch was from the crispy pork skin that was served on top.

The milanesa veal with egg yolk and parmesan was not great. It was oily and more soggy than crispy, same with the fries on the side.

Finally, the steak tartare, which I really enjoyed, both for the texture and the flavour. The bone marrow was delicious, although not well cooked on one side of the bone.

Conclusion

Ultramarinos del Coso is a decent option within its price range. While none of the dishes we tried were particularly memorable, the overall experience was enjoyable and offered good value for money. It’s the kind of place that works best for a relaxed evening with friends, sharing a few dishes and drinks rather than chasing a standout food experience. I would opt for Bar Trafalgar or Chez Pepito in the same neighbourhood if I was looking for a more memorable food experience.
