Last week I watched a mini-series exploring all the traditional Mexican street food across various states. Naturally, my love for Mexican food came back to the surface and I did some research to find a new place to try.

Trompo Tacos is a stand at Mercado San Leopoldo. It is one of the few (if not the only) places in Madrid that is using a vertical spit to cook the meat for the trompo tacos. This is a traditional al pastor method and using a similar cooking technique to Greek gyros which is close to my heart. Trompo Tacos also has a Copil seal, which is a distinction for restaurants offering authentic Mexican cuisine.

Trompo Tacos does not have its own tables and instead, it shares a common sitting area with the rest of the stands at Mercado San Leopoldo. I opted to have the tacos delivered at home on a weekend.

Trompo Tacos – Menu

The menu is short and includes a few tacos variations, two quesadillas, a couple of appetizers and one dessert option.

As a starter/side dish, I got the pureed beans with chorizo and cheese, served with tortilla chips. This was delicious, slightly spicy and hearty. Highly recommended if you visit Trompo Tacos.

The Trompo Tacos which are essentially tacos al pastor, are prepared on the vertical spit. They come with onion and pineapple, exactly as you would get them in Mexico. Rightly so the crown jewel, they are full of flavor from the chili marinade and the caramelization of the meat from cooking on the spit. It was a bit dry when it got delivered to me due to the time it took to arrive. However, I could tell that if you tried it right after it was prepared, it would have been excellent.

Next, the Taco norteño with slow-cooked brisket. The meat was juicy and rich. At the bottom of the taco, there was guacamole and onion but the buttery meat dominated the flavour. Maybe some contrast with textures or acidity would have improved the flavor. On top, a caramelized onion added some sweetness.

Also, I tried the quesadilla Trompo which comes with the same al pastor meat as the tacos and cheese. This was flavourful and similarly to the taco, it would have been much better eaten directly and without the delivery waiting time as the cheese got slightly cold.

There was also plenty of red salsa on the side for all the tacos, although out of the five little containers only one was spicy. Spanish people can’t take the heat but I would have enjoyed the extra spice.

Finally, for dessert the crepes de cajeta. Those were like mini crepes, similar size to the tacos. Inside there was dulce de leche and on top various berries. I really enjoyed that one as well.

Conclusion

Trompo Tacos has some great flavors in its dishes. It’s not a high-class establishment like Can Chan Chan but the flavour and authenticity are definitely there. I would say this falls under the category of Takos al Pastor although I consider Takos al Pastor the most value-for-money place for a cheap meal in Madrid. Tacos Trompo is more of an authentic Mexican taqueria. Nevertheless, I would opt to eat at Tacos Trompo next time and not have it delivered which would only add points to the experience.
